“The more he make you cry” (Avenue Q)

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Thursday evening started out pretty normally. Daddy picked Evan and Sophie up from Lola and Lolo’s house and got home in time for Daddy to make some dinner. Just before dinner was ready I noticed that Evan was holding his hands on his lower stomach. I asked right away if he wanted to sit on the potty. Evan said “no” so I left him alone. In the next few minutes i heard some “unusual” noises coming from Evan’s diaper. A few minutes later it was obvious that Evan had experienced a rather unpleasant bowel movement. I picked Evan up and changed his diaper and noticed at the same time that he was a little “off”. I asked him if his tummy hurt and he said yes. Sophie was an angel the whole time, sitting at the table , drinking her milk and waiting for dinner. I got dinner on the table, Sophie ate, and Evan didn’t touch a thing. By this time I knew for sure that something in Evan’s tummy was not quite right. Sophie finished and Evan was drifting away, quiet and not himself at all.  I got them both on the couch and Evan curled up on the pillows and put his head down not even caring what i turned on the TV to. At this time I could tell that Evan had quite a fever, and got the tylanol. Evan was happy for a moment that he got “cherry drops”, but quickly just laid back down and was happy to have his back rubbed. Daddy JP got home and it was close to 7. The fever started to go down, so we took them both downstairs get ready for bed. Evan was quiet, and unusually happy to just lay in bed next to Daddy. Sophie played around as usual, and soon we gave the “1 minute till bedtime” warning.  Two things happened right at that moment. Sophie (who had been a little gassy) pooped in her diaper. Evan sat up in bed. Now, this is the last time i will make this mistake, but i thought to myself “hmmm., maybe Evan is feeling a little better and this is his effort to avoid bedtime.”   I was sitting on the bed next to Evan, and two seconds later, Evan vommited all over everything in sight!  (ok.. in hindsight I should have known exactly what was happening). I made a noise of surprise and disgust that I wish I hadn’t, and both Evan and Sophie started to cry.  Daddy’s worked together to try to comfort both babies, and strip the bed of all bedding, stuffed animals, and clothing as quickly as possible.  I held Evan in the rocking chair until he calmed down, and then took him upstairs and layed him on the bed while i changed my soiled clothes. All was good and calm upstairs, but Sophie was still crying downstairs. (already with a new diaper.) Evan and i started downstairs, when Evan said in the sweetest voice, “Daddy, why Sophie crying?”  I said, “Sophie is crying because she doesn’t know where you are and she wants to make sure you feel ok”.  Ten minutes later, both kids were fast asleep in their beds, and slept soundly through the night.

Friday morning was pretty normal. 7:00 AM came and Evan started calling for a ‘daddy’. I walked into the room, and Evan said, “daddy, i like apple juice”. This is very unusual for Evan, who normally will run upstairs for breakfast. I asked Evan if he wanted to go upstairs to get apple juice, and he said, “no..me stay here”.  Three minutes later i was back with apple juice, and Evan was drinking hungrily. Sophie started to stir in her bed, and began to babble. At this point Evan, still curled in my lap, said “Daddy, Sophie like apple juice too”.

It’s hard to put in words the warmth that i felt at that moment.  What kind of little boy, who does not feel well, still thinks about what his little sister needs because she can’t say it herself?  Evan is going to make one heck of a good big brother!

“Up where they stay all day in the sun” (The Little Mermaid)

The pictures below are from last weekend. It was a warm weekend in SF, and the kids spent a great afternoon playing in the backyard, splashing in the pool, eating popcorn, and monkeying around. The “new” thing in the house right now is “The Little Mermaid”. We were playing around in the guest room a few weeks ago, and there happened to be a pile of DVD’s that Evan decided to go through. After looking at them, he held up “The Little Mermaid” and said “me watch this one”. As far as we know, he had never seen or heard of this movie, but history has shown us then when he requests a certain video in the car, he usually seems to know what he wants, so we though “what the hay?” and put it on. Well from the very first time they saw it, they were both absolutely absorbed in Ariel! It has become the ONLY thing they want to watch – even Calliou is barely interesting at this point!

We have been talking to Evan and Sophie every day about “Max”. Evan definitely is prepared. His latest thing is going around saying “goo goo gaga” because he knows that is what Max is going to say. In this attached video, Evan talks about baby max and how he is going to help his daddies take care of baby max.

Saturday night in Fair Play turned out to be a great evening. Our friends from a couple of house’s down came over for dinner and some playtime.  Ethaniel and Aiden are a little bit older (3 and 5), but all 4 of the kids seemed to have a great time. We played inside for bit, but ate outside just as it was starting to get dark. As dinner ended, the kids got down and played around while parents relaxed with another glass of wine. Eventually Ethaniel and Aiden pulled out the empty  swimming pool, and made it into their “space ship”. The kids got popsicles, and all four of them sat in the boat and pretended to go wherever it was they they went, and pretended to be whatever it was they were pretending to be.  Evan and Sophie loved the whole thing  -  being part of a big kid game, eating popsicles, and staying up later then normal!

We have decided on a name for our new little boy! Maxwell David Bowik.  This is the first time we have been able to decide on a name before our baby was born.  With both Evan and Sophie, we were caught off guard by how early they came. This time, Max has already passed Evan as he goes into his 35th week. Great for him, good for Angela, and hooray for two dads who are more prepared then ever!

We starting going through names a few weeks ago. We had only a few criteria. (keep it fairly simple, make it flow with “Evan, Sophie, and >>>>”, and make sure Angela, and both of us, all liked it) We always ask for Angela’s input, and try to incorporate  that as well. “Evan” was actually Angela’s suggestion. So we had come up with a list but weren’t thrilled with any of them. One evening JP said “Max” and I loved it immediately.  We thought about possible full names and decided on Maxwell pretty easily, and a middle name of David worked for both of us. Angela put her stamp of approval on it the next day. We let it sit for a few more days, and then confirmed with each other that we were all settled on it.

The attached photo is the piece of paper we got after the last ultrasound on  our little boy. Due date was moved up another week to October 25 – meaning we are now 34 weeks in! Everything looked good on this ultrasound including nose and mouth that are “unremarkable”. It turns out that just means there is no cleft pallet or anything like that going  on!

“Country boy, ain’t got no blues” ( Ring of Fire)

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Once every so often we wonder if having a home in the country is worth it. If and when we have those thoughts, they quickly leave once we get to Fair Play and enjoy all the reasons we wanted it in the first place.  Saturday was one of those days. The weather cooperated – it was hot, but not too hot. Nanna and Papi were there in the morning and we got off to a slow and casual start. About 9 AM we walked the neighbors house where we all got to pick through the garden sampling raspberries (Evan’s favorite), Strawberries (Sophies favorite), tomatoes, and anything else we wanted. Sophie and Evan love running around and picking what they want – and we are truly greatful to have wonderful neighbors like Rosie and Kelli who are so welcoming and generous.  When we got home from there,  We filled the kids pools with warm water because it was still only about 75 degrees at 10:00 AM. The kids played a bit in their pools and Daddies and Papi and Nanna read the paper and talked politics. With the kids happily entertained, Daddies left at 11:30 for a little wine tasting at DK Cellers and then a quiet lunch at Boccanato.  When we returned from lunch, the kids were napping and Nanna and Papi headed back to SF.  After naps Evan and Sophie were happy to play in the pool again.  Daddies had a glass of wine, a few crackers and cheese and watched them play.  A little while later, Giovanni came walking up the hill to pick some figs from our fig tree.  The epitome of good country living in my mind is when the owner/chef of the local Italian restaurant can wander onto your property to get some fresh figs for this evenings dinner service!  Tuscany has nothing on Fair Play!! We wrapped up the evening with a BBQ for just Daddies and kids on the back terrace as the sun set.

The pictures below are Evan and Sophie playing on the see saw that was a gift from cousins Eric and Tess. It was a great weekend to bring this out and they did a great job of learning to see saw together!

Angela arrived in San Francisco last Thursday afternoon. On Friday we had our first appointment with Jon. Jon took a few measurements but could not determine boy or girl. Everything looked fine, and the measurements gave us a new due date of Nov 2. This moved our time table up about a week, but with our babies , we never know when they will decided to show up!  Today we had a complete ultrasound exam at CPMC, got pictures, and found out that we are having another little boy! We are very excited! We didn’t really care girl or boy, but knowing just makes it that much more real. We can now talk about names with certainty, get rid of all little girl clothes that Sophie has outgrown, and sort of just ‘plan’ our future and what it will be like having a 8  year old boy, 7 year old girl, and 6 year old boy some day!  We know now that Sophie will have her own room some day and the boys will share. Little things like that may seem small and trivial – but its something we think about.  So we are at about 31 weeks right now, and our goal is to make it to at least 35 weeks. We really would rather not have to have this baby tube fed – and 35 weeks is generally when they get the sucking reflex.

The pictures below are from today’s ultrasound. In real life you can make out some eyes, face, nose, and in one of them the boy parts. I guess it takes a trained eye – but here they are anyway!

“That’s why I love vegetables” (The Fantasticks)

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Another weekend in Fair Play. This was the first weekend in many months that the four of us went alone. It was nice – the kids were great, and we enjoyed the quiet time with them. The highlight for us and the kids had to be the trip to neighbor Rosie’s incredible garden. It is producing a ton of fruit and vegetables right now, and the kids got to walk around and pick and eat whatever they wanted. They got to try all sorts of raspberries, strawberries, grean beens, tomatoes, peppers, and perhaps best of all, Rosie sent us home with (along with bunch of stuff) an amazing watermelon! Watermelon happens to be Evan’s favorite right now, so it was perfect timing.

This weekend also marked a huge point in our lives. Our very first grapes eaten off of our own vines. It’s not quite a vineyard yet, but the grandparents gave us 2 grape vines when we announced baby #3. One Cabernet, and one Thompson seedless.  The Thompson does not have any grapes on it this year, but the Cab has about 20 or so and the first two were ready to eat. So I gave one to Evan, and one to Sophie. Evan spit his out – so much for our amazing soil and sun in Fair Play!
